Canada to Allow Fully Vaccinated Americans Into Country Starting August 9

The Canadian federal government just announced today it will allow fully vaccinated Americans into the country as of August 9 12:01am Eastern Daylight Time.

Only those fully vaccinated with one of the COVID-19 vaccines approved by Canada will be allowed. Which are:

  • Pfizer-BioNTech
  • Moderna
  • Johnson & Johnson
  • Astra Zeneca

Which should not be a problem for the vast majority of travelers from the US as only Pfizer, Moderna, and J&J were approved in the United States. Canada considers those who have received a full course of any of the approved vaccine for at least 14 days to be fully vaccinated.

While pre-arrival PCR testing will continue to be required, mandatory hotel stays will be removed. Also, mandatory post-arrival testing will no longer be required as well, except for those who are randomly selected for additional testing.

This reopening is unilateral on the Canadian part. The US government, as of now, has not announced any reopening for Canadians planning to cross into US via land. As a reminder, arrivals into US via air was never closed off to Canadians during the COVID-19 pandemic.

And also some good news for international travelers. Canada is currently looking at September 7 to reopen travel to foreign nationals, but as usual, plans may change depending on the COVID rates in Canada then.
